What EXIF Metadata Reveals About Your Photos (and How to Strip It)
Every photo your phone or camera takes carries a hidden block of data travelling inside the file. Most of it is harmless trivia about the camera. EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a block of metadata embedded inside JPEG, HEIC, and TIFF photos. It records how the picture was made: the camera or phone make and model, the lens, and the exact settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length). It also stores the date and time down to the second, the orientation the camera was held at, and, if location services were on, the GPS coordinates of where you were standing.
Who actually sees it
EXIF lives in the file, so anyone who receives the original file can read it with free tools. The nuance is what counts as the original. Many large social platforms strip most metadata when you upload a photo, which removes the risk in that one path. But that protection is inconsistent, not guaranteed, and does not apply when you share the file directly: an email attachment, a message sent as a file, a cloud-storage link, or a photo handed over on a drive all carry the full EXIF. The safe assumption is that a file you send still has its metadata unless you removed it yourself.
How to remove it
The reliable way to strip EXIF is to re-encode the image. When a tool decodes a photo and writes out a fresh file, the new file contains only the pixels, not the original metadata block. That is why simply converting a photo to another format, or running it through a compressor, removes the EXIF along the way. You do not need a special eraser; you need the image re-saved.
When you might want to keep it
EXIF is not the enemy; context is. Photographers rely on it to remember settings, archives use the timestamps to sort images, and editing the data is sometimes the goal. The point is not to destroy metadata reflexively but to control it: keep it for your own library, and strip it from anything you publish or send to people who do not need to know where you were.
