How the calculator works

This calculator adds sales tax to a pre-tax price or reverses it out of a tax-inclusive total. It returns the subtotal, the tax, and the total.

Everything runs in your browser and no data is sent to any server.

Entering your rate

Because US sales tax varies by state and locality, you enter the combined rate yourself, or pick a common preset such as 0, 4, 6, 7, 8.25, or 10%.

Adding or reversing the tax

Enter a pre-tax price to add sales tax on top, or enter a tax-inclusive total to reverse the tax back out and find the underlying subtotal.

Estimate, not tax advice

Sales tax rules, sourcing, and taxable categories differ by state, so this is an estimate only and not tax advice. Treat the result as a guide rather than a final number.

Frequently asked questions

What is the US sales tax rate?

There is no single national rate. The US has no federal sales tax or VAT, so the rate is set by each state and often by the county or city on top. Combined rates range from 0 in a few states to over 10% in some localities. Enter the combined state plus local rate that applies where you buy.

How do I add sales tax to a price?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the rate. At 7% a 100 USD subtotal has 7 USD of tax, for a 107 USD total. Choose add sales tax and the calculator does this for you.

How do I reverse sales tax out of a total?

Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1 plus the rate. At 7% a 107 USD total is 100 USD subtotal plus 7 USD tax. Choose reverse and the calculator splits the total back into subtotal and tax.

Which states have no sales tax?

Oregon, Delaware, Montana, and New Hampshire have no statewide sales tax (Alaska has no state rate but allows local sales taxes). For those, use a rate of 0 unless a local tax applies.
