How the income tax calculator works

This calculator applies Germany's official §32a EStG income-tax tariff for 2026 to your taxable income, with the basic allowance built in. It supports single and married (splitting) assessment and adds the solidarity surcharge and church tax where they apply.

What it estimates

It works out the annual income tax from your taxable income. Where a gross-to-net salary calculator estimates monthly payroll deductions, this one focuses on the yearly figure, so it complements rather than replaces that tool.

Splitting, surcharge and church tax

Married couples can be assessed together under the splitting tariff, which can lower the combined bill. On top of the income tax, the tool adds the solidarity surcharge and church tax in the cases where they are due.

An estimate, not tax advice

It is an estimate, not tax advice. Your actual assessment depends on your full return and personal circumstances, so treat the result as a guide and check official figures for the binding amount.

Frequently asked questions

What is taxable income (zu versteuerndes Einkommen)?

It is your income after all deductions, allowances and lump sums. This tool starts from that figure and applies the tax tariff; it does not work out the deductions for you.

How does the splitting tariff work?

For jointly assessed spouses, the tax is twice the amount due on half the joint income. This usually lowers the tax when partners earn different amounts.

When is the solidarity surcharge due?

Since 2021 most people pay no soli. It only applies above a high income-tax threshold, with a phase-in zone, so it shows up only at higher incomes.

What is the difference between average and marginal rate?

The average rate is your total income tax divided by your taxable income. The marginal rate is the tax on the next euro you earn, which is higher because the tariff is progressive.
