Calculate VAT for Germany (19/7 %), Austria (20/13/10 %) and Switzerland (8.1/2.6/3.8 %), both ways: add VAT to a net amount or remove it from a gross amount.
How to use the VAT Calculator
Pick the country, then enter your amount.
Choose the VAT rate and the direction (net → gross or gross → net).
Read the result and the overview of all rates for that country.
The VAT calculator (Mehrwertsteuer-Rechner) works in both directions: add VAT to a net amount to get the gross price, or remove VAT from a gross amount to recover the net price and the tax.
It covers the German standard rate of 19 percent and the reduced rate of 7 percent, the common Austrian rates (20 and 10 percent) and the Swiss rate (8.1 percent), plus a custom rate field for anything else. All rates are shown side by side in the overview so you can compare at a glance.
Example: a net amount of 100 EUR at 19 percent gives 19 EUR VAT and a gross price of 119 EUR. Working backwards, a gross amount of 119 EUR at 19 percent contains 19 EUR VAT and 100 EUR net.
It is handy for freelancers and small businesses writing invoices, for checking a receipt, or for comparing net and gross prices when budgeting.
Use the figures as a quick calculation, not formal tax advice. Which rate applies to a given product or service can vary, so confirm the correct rate before relying on it for an invoice.
Frequently asked questions
Net to gross adds VAT to a net amount to get the gross price. Gross to net removes the VAT from a gross amount to recover the net price and the tax portion.
Choose the gross-to-net direction. The tool divides by 1 plus the rate, so 119 EUR gross at 19 percent yields 100 EUR net and 19 EUR VAT.
Net times the rate gives the VAT, and net plus VAT gives the gross. To reverse it, gross divided by (1 + rate) gives the net amount.
Germany uses 19 percent standard and 7 percent reduced, Austria 20 and 10 percent, and Switzerland 8.1 percent. A custom field covers any other rate.
In Germany the 7 percent rate applies to items like most food, books and public transport. The standard 19 percent applies to most other goods and services.
It is accurate for calculating and checking VAT, but it is not invoicing software and does not replace formal bookkeeping or tax advice.
