Fuel Cost Calculator

Work out the fuel cost of a trip from distance, consumption and fuel price, and split it between passengers.

How to use the Fuel Cost

  1. 01

Enter the distance, your consumption in litres per 100 km and the fuel price.

  2. 02

Set how many people share the ride and whether it is a round trip.

  3. 03

Read the total cost, the cost per person and the litres used.

How it works

This calculator turns distance, fuel consumption and the price per litre into the cost of a trip, with an optional split between passengers.

It is handy for planning a road trip, comparing two routes, budgeting a regular commute, or working out a fair share when several people travel together.

The formula

The calculation is straightforward: the litres used are the distance divided by 100 times your consumption in litres per 100 km, and multiplying by the price per litre gives the cost. A round trip simply doubles the distance.

Finding your consumption

Your consumption is shown by the car's on-board computer as average litres per 100 km, or you can measure it yourself by dividing the litres you filled by the kilometres driven and multiplying by 100.

Splitting a carpool

For a carpool, set the number of people and the calculator divides the total evenly, which makes splitting the cost of a shared commute or a long drive simple and fair.

Petrol and electric cars

It is built for combustion fuel priced per litre. For an electric car the idea is the same but uses kWh per 100 km and your electricity price, which the electricity cost calculator can help with. Everything runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How is the fuel cost calculated?

Litres used are the distance divided by 100 times your consumption. Multiplying by the price per litre gives the cost. A round trip doubles the distance.

Where do I find my consumption?

Your car's on-board computer shows the average litres per 100 km, or you can work it out by dividing litres filled by kilometres driven times 100.

Can I split the cost for a carpool?

Yes. Set the number of people and the calculator divides the total cost evenly, which is handy for sharing a commute or a road trip.

How can I lower my fuel cost?

Drive smoothly and within speed limits, keep tyres properly inflated, remove roof boxes and extra weight, and combine errands into one trip. All reduce litres per 100 km.

Does it work for electric cars?

It is designed for fuel priced per litre. For an electric car, calculate with kWh per 100 km and your electricity price instead, for example using the electricity cost calculator.
