What it does

This currency converter turns an amount in one currency into another using the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, covering around 30 major currencies including EUR, USD, GBP, CHF and JPY. The date of the rate is shown so you always know how current it is.

Where the rates come from

The ECB publishes these reference rates once every working day at about 16:00 Central European Time. The tool fetches them through this site's own cached endpoint, so it loads quickly and your browser only ever connects to this site, not to a third-party finance service.

Because the rate is set once per working day, it does not change on weekends or public holidays; on those days the most recent working day's rate applies until the next publication.

What a reference rate is

It is important to understand what a reference rate is. It is the official mid-market rate for the day, which is exactly what you want for estimates, bookkeeping, invoices, expense reports and tax calculations. It is not the live, second-by-second rate a bank or exchange quotes, and it does not include the spread or fees a provider would add to a real transaction.

For accounting and tax in particular, ECB reference rates are a widely accepted basis, which is why this converter is built on them rather than on a volatile live feed.

How to use it

To use it, enter an amount, choose the currency to convert from and the one to convert to, and read the converted figure along with the exchange rate used. The swap button flips the direction instantly.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the rates come from?

From the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, via the open Frankfurter API. They update once each working day around 16:00 CET.

Are these live trading rates?

No. They are official daily reference rates, ideal for estimates, accounting and tax. They are not the real-time rate your bank or exchange uses, and they do not include fees or spread.

Which currencies are supported?

Around 30 major currencies covered by the ECB, including EUR, USD, GBP, CHF, JPY and more.

Why don't the rates change on weekends?

The ECB only publishes on working days, so there is no new rate on weekends or public holidays. The converter uses the most recent working day's rate until the next one is published.

Can I use these rates for accounting or tax?

Yes. Official daily reference rates are a widely accepted basis for bookkeeping, invoices and tax. For a real transaction, your bank's rate including fees will differ.

Does my conversion data go anywhere?

The rate table is fetched from this site's own cached endpoint, and the conversion itself runs in your browser. You only connect to this site.
