Grade Average Calculator

Calculate your weighted grade average from German school grades (1 to 6) with custom weights.

How to use the Grade Calculator

  1. 01

Enter each grade from 1 (best) to 6.

  2. 02

Set a weight for each grade, or leave them all at 1 for a simple average.

  3. 03

Add or remove rows and read your weighted average.

How it works

This is a grade average calculator for the German 1 to 6 scale, with per-grade weights so that exams, tests and assignments can count differently towards the average.

It is handy for tracking where you stand during a term and for working out what you need on a remaining exam to reach a target. Everything runs in your browser.

The weighting formula

Each grade is multiplied by its weight, the results are added up, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. Using a weight of 1 everywhere gives a plain, unweighted average.

Weights let you reflect how a course is actually marked, for example a final exam counting double a quiz, or a project counting for a third of the grade. Set them to match your school's or course's scheme.

Reading the German scale

The German scale runs from 1 (very good) to 6 (insufficient), the opposite direction to systems where higher is better, so a lower average is a better result.

The descriptor shown under the result follows the usual grade bands, so you can see at a glance whether an average lands in the good, satisfactory or sufficient range.

Using your result

Once you know your current average, you can plan ahead: try different grades for an upcoming exam to see what you need to reach a target, and adjust your revision accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

How is the average calculated?

Each grade is multiplied by its weight, the results are summed, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. Equal weights give a plain average.

What do the weights mean?

Weights let some grades count more than others, for example a final exam counting double a quiz. Use 1 everywhere for an unweighted average.

Which grading scale does it use?

The German scale where 1 is very good and 6 is insufficient. The descriptor under the result follows the usual grade bands.

What counts as a good average?

On the German scale lower is better. Around 1.0 to 1.5 is very good, up to about 2.5 is good, and the pass boundary is 4.0, with anything above that failing.

Can I see what I need on the next exam?

Enter your existing grades with their weights, then try a value for the upcoming exam: the average updates so you can find the grade that reaches your target.
