How the hourly wage calculator works

An hourly wage calculator that converts between an hourly rate and weekly, monthly and yearly pay, in both directions, so you can move between however a job quotes its pay and the figure you actually want to compare.

Everything runs in your browser, so the figures you enter never leave your device.

The maths behind the conversion

The maths is simple: weekly pay is the hourly rate times your weekly hours, the year has 52 weeks, so yearly pay is weekly times 52, and the monthly figure is a twelfth of the year. The from-monthly mode runs this in reverse.

When it helps

It is useful for comparing job offers that are quoted differently, one per hour and one per month, pricing freelance work, or simply checking what a salary works out to per hour of your time.

Gross figures, and freelance rates

These are gross figures, before tax and social contributions. For German net pay after deductions, the salary calculator is the tool to use; this one stays at the gross level so the conversions are exact.

Freelancers should note that a freelance hourly rate is not comparable to an employee's. A self-employed rate has to cover paid leave, sick days, pension, health insurance, equipment and gaps between projects, so it usually needs to be well above the equivalent employee hourly wage.

Frequently asked questions

How is the hourly rate converted to a salary?

Weekly pay is the hourly rate times your weekly hours. The year has 52 weeks, so yearly pay is weekly times 52 and the monthly figure is a twelfth of the year.

How do I get an hourly rate from a monthly salary?

Multiply the monthly salary by 12 for the year, then divide by your weekly hours times 52. The from-monthly mode does this automatically.

Is this gross or net pay?

These are gross figures before tax and social contributions. For German net pay after deductions, use the salary calculator instead.

What hourly rate should a freelancer charge?

Usually well above the employee equivalent. A freelance rate must also cover paid leave, sick days, pension, insurance, equipment and unbilled time, so doubling a comparable employee rate is a common starting point.

How many working hours are there in a year?

It depends on your weekly hours: at 40 hours a week it is about 2,080 hours (40 times 52) before subtracting holidays and leave, which reduce the actually worked total.
